File Limits and Performance

Papr works on your device, so the size of a file is limited by the browser and by the device, and by a few limits Papr sets itself. This guide lists those limits, and how to keep a large file responsive.

The limits

  • Opening a PDF: up to 100 MiB.
  • Converting a PDF to images: the PDF is read with the same 100 MiB limit. Images you convert to PDF are limited to 50 MiB each, and to 100 MiB in total for a batch.
  • Converting a document to PDF (Word, Excel, CSV, HTML, SVG): up to 100 MiB.
  • Importing a Word (.docx) file into Docs: up to 25 MiB. A restored Docs backup is also limited to 25 MiB.
  • Importing a spreadsheet into Sheets: up to 25 MiB, with up to 50 sheets and 1,000,000 filled cells in each sheet.
  • Exporting a sheet: the Excel file holds up to 400,000 cells, and the PDF up to 200,000 cells. A larger sheet is refused with a message before the file is made.

The limits on what is kept

Your work is saved in the browser, and each kind of saved record has its own size limit:

  • A PDF session: 50 MiB, including its annotations and bookmarks.
  • A document in Docs: 20 MiB.
  • A workbook in Sheets: 20 MiB.

Translation models

The first time you use a language pair in Translate, Papr downloads its model, which the dialog sizes at about 20 MB. Models are kept in the browser, so the storage they use counts toward the browser's own limit for the site.

What makes a file heavy

  • High-resolution images and scanned pages.
  • Hundreds of pages, or very large page sizes.
  • Embedded fonts and complex artwork.
  • Many annotations on each page.
  • Split View with two large documents open at once.

Your device's memory and processor set how fast a file feels. A recent computer or phone handles a large PDF well. An older device may need smaller files, or fewer open tabs.

Keep it responsive

  • Split a long PDF into smaller parts before you mark it up.
  • Remove the pages you do not need, then add annotations.
  • Compress a large scan. The compression options are in the Compress tool.
  • Run OCR only on the pages that need it, with a custom page range.
  • Close other browser tabs while you work on a large file.

Try it on your own file

Everything in this guide happens in your browser tab. Your file stays on your device.
